- Stop bothering and start making life simple. Just take whatever wire you
- have (preferably made of copper) and string it between two of something
- (a house and a tree, for example). If you dislike the result, put it up
- between two other things of something. Even better, put up two different
- wires and test what gives best result.
- That would give you a good start. When you know the results of all this
- you may start elaborating on shields, gauge, threads and you name it.

- Hmmm, did you really get the cards back through EI5HB? EI7M's

-
- For a short while, W6GO mistakenly listed EI5HC as the manager, but

-
- If you did get a card back from EI5HB that could explain the confusion

-
- Another QSL nice guy is VP2VF. Seeing that he must work every Ham

- I presume this will be first made available in California where it can compete
- with the grave sites that have a monitor and a video taped message from the
- deceased, for viewing by those who pass by and push the button.
-
- You seem to have failed to take account of the FCC's vanity call sign proposal.
- If they go ahead and charge $70 for 7 years as some have proposed, then
- presumably the burial fee could include an annuity for perpetual renewal.
- However, some have proposed a single lifetime fee, with no mention of an
- afterlife fee.
-
- BTW, will there be a code requirement for interment, or might an Extra have to
- spend all eternity lying next to a no-Code Tech?
-
- Also, will there be a service to handle QSL requests?

- Subject: Help Needed: HW-18 Audio
-
- I am restoring a Heath HW-18 HF SSB transceiver and have seen an anomaly in
- the received audio. At high volume levels (the gain control at 3 o'clock
- position or higher), the audio output goes into what sounds like a low
- frequency oscillation (perhaps 30-40 Hz). The AGC is audio derived, and I
- am suspecting some sort of unintended interaction in that circuitry (due to
- aged components) between the recovered audio and the RF/IF stages. Due to
- time constraints, I have not yet analyzed the circuitry nor put a scope on
- it. I notice at first glance that there is a large 10 ufd 350V electrolytic
- in this loop, and I would intitially suspect this may have dried out, but
- that assumption is unsubstantiated. I'm hoping someone else has seen and
- fixed this.
-
- The HW-18 is / was a crystal controlled version of the HW-12 / 22 / 32
- series of Heath 180 watt "Mono-banders", designed for MARS, CAP and 160
- meter operation (three different "dash" numbers). It used the same PC board
- as the other models, and merely substituted a crystal controlled oscillator
- for the VFO. I am wondering if anyone who still has one of these models has
- seen (and fixed) a similar problem.

- This 14300kc interests me. First, I guess the author really meant 14.3
- kc.
- Also, I guess that kc was used because it is supposed
- to show a long term connection with radio. However, kc was always
- incorrect as used because it was always supposed to be kc/s. A time
- unit has to be provided to give a proper frame of reference. 14300
- kilocycles doesn't really provide any real useful information. One of the
- reasons that hertz is used is because it is a unit for cycle per second.
-
- This kind of identification with "the true antiquity" of radio by
- using quaint "older" terms. Always reminds me of being in the Army and
- being trained by older NCOs who always talked about the good old days
- of the "brown shoe" army when "men were men" and everything was just
- a lot better. I guess the Kc is supposed to show that the poster came
- from a time when "hams were ham" and modern changes didn't affect the
- hobby. Or maybe I'm just being too critical of a slip.
